I've generally practiced the same philosophy in the IT world for the last 30 years. 1) Define the problem Look carefully at what the root cause or the main thing that the client needs solved. Listen to them. Ask questions. Get to the root of the problem. Write things down! 2) Orangize & Document the information Once you know the problem, you can define the solution. This is where you can get creative. You can use your experience to come up with a solution that is not only effective, but also cost effective. 3) Solve the Problem with right Information. This is where the rubber meets the road. You have to implement the solution. This is where you can see if your solution is effective. You can also see if you have any unforeseen problems. 4) Solve the problem & Test the solution
